The exterior of the Icarus Base The destruction of the Icarus Base by the Lucian Alliance

Icarus

Myth ~ ANCIENT GREECE ~ (Also: Ikaros) Icarus is the son of Daedalus and King Minos’ slave, Naucrate. After Daedalus murdered his nephew, he eventually fled to Crete. There, Daedalus was employed by King Minos, where he created many inventions for the king, including the Minotaur’s Labyrinth. Daedalus helped Theseus (an Athenian hero-king) kill the Minotaur (a monster with the head and tail of a bull on a man’s body), escape the Labyrinth, and thereby allowing Theseus to take Ariadne (Minos' daughter) back to Athens. Minos imprisoned Daedalus and Icarus in the Labyrinth as punishment. In order to escape the Labyrinth, Daedalus fashioned two sets of wings from wax, feathers, and reeds. As father and son were about to take flight, he warned Icarus not to fly too high, as the sun would melt the wax, and not too low or the feathers would get wet. Icarus became careless and flew too high. The wax melted and Icarus fell into the sea and drowned. His body washed upon the shore of an island where Hercules buried him.
The Show (Stargate Universe) ~ Two years ago, the Icarus Base was established on an unnamed planet with a “uniquely powerful core,” presumably made of Naquadah and Naquadria. The core is used to power the Stargate when the ninth chevron is dialed. As Eli and Dr. Rush are implementing the solution to the Prometheus Proof in order to dial the ninth chevron, a Goa'uld mothership (suspected to be piloted by the Lucian Alliance) enters and starts to fire on the base. The USS Hammond (Phoenix) tries to defend them; however, the planet is destroyed just as the Gate accepts the ninth chevron (101-102 – Air).

The planet Othala in the Ida Galaxy

Ida

Myth/Geography ~ ANCIENT INDIA ~ The Hindu goddess of prayer and devotion. ~ MODERN TURKEY ~ A peak in the Kaz Dagi mountain range in northwestern Turkey, located near the ancient site of Troy. It is the place where Paris judged the footrace between Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena for the Golden Apple. The Greek Gods are said to have witnessed the Trojan War from the highest peak, which is about 5800 feet high. ~ MODERN CRETE ~ In Crete, it is the classical name of the highest peak (8058 feet), which, in Greek mythology, is where Zeus was raised. ~ ANCIENT NORSE ~ In Norse legend, Ida is a plain in the middle of the Asgard, where the Aesir meet to decide upon important matters. Also called Idavoll or Idavold (Translation: "plain of activity" or "field of deeds"), it was a green field that was surrounded by the 13 halls of the Aesir gods. Balder (the son of Odin and Frigg) was accidentally killed here by Höd (the blind god). Idavoll was destroyed at Ragnarok, but it re-grew and the surviving gods reconstructed their palaces here.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ The name of the galaxy that Othala, the home planet of the Asgard, is located (215 – The Fifth Race). With the Replicators on the verge of invasion, Carter and Thor devise a plan to save the Ida Galaxy. Because the Asgard depend to much on technology, they are unable to stop the Replicators. Thus Thor asks Carter, with her "less sophisticated thinking," to aid their plight. She proposes that the Asgard take their newest and most sophisticated ship "The O’Neill" and blow it up in hyperspace, destroying the Replicators and saving the Ida Galaxy. Meanwhile, Jack, Daniel, and Teal’c fight the Replicators that survived the crash of the Bilskirnir on Earth (322 – Nemesis, 401 – Small Victories). The planet of Orilla is also in the Ida Galaxy. The Asgard gather there to enact their mass suicide due to their incurable degeneration disease by blowing up the planet (1020 – Unending).

Teal’c makes Imhotep-kabob

Imhotep

Myth/History ~ ANCIENT EGYPT ~ (Translation: "He Who Comes in Peace") Called Imuthes by the Greeks, he was the vizier of Pharaoh Djoser (also called Zoser; the second king of the Third Dynasty). Imhotep was the architect of the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, near Memphis. The Step Pyramid is a series of Mastaba. He was deified upon his death and was worshiped as the son of Ptah (God of Craftsmen) and his mother was either Nut or Sakhmet. During the New Kingdom, he was compared to Nefertum. His worship was centered in Memphis, although he had a small temple was built on the Island of Philae during the Ptolemaic Period. As a God, he was the physician to both the gods and men. Imhotep was first honored as a god as a wise man and scribe. In the New Kingdom, he was made the patron of scribes. He was linked to Thoth and became a patron of wisdom and medicine. Miraculous cures were often credited to him. He was skilled in all areas of administration, royal enterprises, priesthood, writing, medicine, and a founder of the studies of astronomy and architecture.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ A minor Goa’uld, who is supposedly killed by Kytano, his first prime. Daniel says that he was probably never a System Lord; “most likely an insignificant Goa’uld from a backwater planet.” He is leading the Jaffa rebels as part of a plot to gain power. Yu tells Teal’c the truth about Imhotep, after which Teal’c challenges Kytano for leadership of the Rebel Jaffa troops. Imhotep is deceased (518 – The Warrior).

Tasty! Ellia infected John Michael

Iratus

Language ~ LATIN ~ Iratus is the Latin word for "Angry, Wrathful."
The Show (Stargate Atlåntis) ~ Native to the Pegasus Galaxy, the Iratus Bug is the ancestor of the Wraith. In all probability, over millions of years, the Iratus and human/Ancient DNA blended to bring about the Wraith. They also spin spider-like webs to trap their prey. Once the Iratus Bug has attached itself to the prey, the prey’s limbs become paralyzed and eventually, vital organ failure. Like the Wraith, the Iratus Bug has very fast regenerative capabilities. Salt water will temporally deter the bugs, however the only thing that will stop them from feeding is the death of the prey (104 – Thirty Eight Minutes). They nest in caves where they suspend their egg sacks from the ceilings. Dr. Beckett developed prototype retrovirus, which could, theoretically, strip the Iratus DNA from the Wraith, and leave human genetic material (207 – Instinct, 208 – Conversion). Dr. Beckett has perfected his retrovirus and tests it on a Wraith that Sheppard nicknamed Michael. The virus suppressed Michael’s Wraith parts and his physical appearance was human. However, he was having nightmares about being a Wraith. He also needed daily injections of the virus (218 – Michael).

The Ion Cannon

Ion Cannon

Science ~ ATOMS ~ An ion is an atom (or group of atoms) that can be positively (called "cations") or negatively (called "anions") charged. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, "Ions are formed by the addition of electrons to, or the removal of electrons from, neutral atoms or molecules or other ions; by combination of ions with other particles; or by rupture of a covalent bond between two atoms in such a way that both of the electrons of the bond are left in association with one of the formerly bonded atoms."
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Despite Zipacna’s plotting; the cannons successfully defend Tollana against his ships after the Triad finds in favor of Skaara (315 – Pretense). Tanith has designed a new shield for the mother-ships that are impervious to the cannons, which prompts the Curia to trade them to the SGC (509 – Between Two Fires).

Lord Haikon tells of Ishkur and the origin of the Sodan

Ishkur / Iškur / Iskur

Myth ~ MESOPOTAMIA ~ (Equivalents: Akkadian, Adad; Semitic, Hadad; Anatolian, Teshub; Amorite, Amurru) "He-Who-Wields-The-Lightning" is the Sumerian God of Storms and Rain. He was also Inspector of the Cosmos, when working with Enki (Ea/Oannes). His Assyrian cult particularly played up his warrior aspect. Ishkur, however, was less important than Adad, because farming in southern Mesopotamia mostly depended on the irrigation instead of the infrequent rain. Ishkur was also less important because some of his attributes were also covered by the gods Enlil/Ellil ("Lord Wind") and Ninurta ("Lord of the Earth"). Ishkur was sometimes described as an assistant to the former two. In the cuneiform texts, he is often presented as a dual god, in that he was both generous and malicious. The rain he brought caused the land to become fertile, however, it could also cause destruction. There are several versions of his family. Sometimes, he is the son of An/Anu (Firmament-God) and twin-brother of Enki. Other times, he is the son of Nanna/Sin (Moon-God) and Ningal ("Great Queen"), and the brother of Utu/Shamash (Sun-God) and Inana/Ishtar. He was married to Shala/Gubarra (Grain-Goddess; linked to Dagan) and sometimes father of Gibil/Gerra (Fire-God). Karkara was his Babylonian cult center and his temple was called E-karkara. His sacred animal was the Bull. He is physically depicted wearing a horned helmet and carrying a thunderbolt or spear. Ishkur is on the god-list found at Šurruppak (pronounced Shuruppak; modern Fara, Iraq).
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ 5000 years ago, his Jaffa rebelled and became the Sodan. Ishkur identified the rebel Jaffa as traitors and ordered their deaths. The Sodan tried to fight against him, but they were outnumbered and went in search of Kheb. Ishkur’s fate unknown (908 -- Babylon).

Rebel Ishta leader of Amazon Jaffa

Ishtar

Myth ~ ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA ~ The Akkadians, Babylonians, Assyrians, and Sumerians worshiped her in various incarnations. Called Inanna in the Sumerian language, she is the Akkadian Goddess of War, Fertility, and Sexual Love. Mainly worshiped in the city of Babylon and the Region of Akkad (Agade). Her title is "Queen of the Universe." She forms an astral triad with Shamash (Sun God), and Sin (also called Su'en [Sumerian: Nanna]; God of Moon). She is the daughter of An (also called Anu; Sky God) and Antu (Anatum/Antum; a goddess of creation), although her father is sometimes Sin. She is the sister of Shamash (Sun God) and Ishkur. She is also the younger sister of Ereshkigal (Supreme Goddess of the Underworld). She is sometimes An’s second consort, other times she is the wife of Tammuz ([Sumerian: Dumuzi] Akkadian Vegetation-God; and (like Osiris) a symbol of death and rebirth in nature; sometimes referred to as a mortal Shepherd-King). She is associated with the planet Venus (The Morning and Evening Star). She was also the patroness of the alehouse and the protectress of prostitutes. Her sacred object is a star with six, eight, or sixteen rays surrounded by a circle. Her temple in the city of Uruk was called Eanna (Translation: "House of An" i.e. the sky). Compared to Hathor, Aphrodite, the Hittite/Hurrian Goddess Shaushka, and the Canaanite Goddesses Astarte and Anat. She is often described as an evil, heartless, woman who destroys her lovers. Her sacred number was 15 and her sacred animal was the lion. Learn More: Gateways To Babylon: Inanna I, Gateways To Babylon: Inanna II, and Wikipedia: Ishtar.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Possibly named for Ishtar, Ishta is the leader of the Amazonian Female Jaffa Warriors, also known as the Hak’tyl Resistance, who are rebelling against the Goa’uld Moloch. She is also a temple high priestess of Moloch and is responsible for keeping records of births and to preside over the Ceremony of Fire, where all newborn girls are murdered. Ishta forms the Resistance to save the Jaffa girls. She readily proposes an alliance with the Tau’ri, although she is reluctant, at first, to accept their offer of tretonin (710 – Birthright).

Isis’ Canopic Jar

Isis

Myth ~ ANCIENT EGYPT ~ Called Aset or Iset in Middle Egyptian, her name is the same as the hieroglyph for "Throne," which she is occasionally embodied as (Isis is the Greek version). She is the wife and sister of Osiris, mother of Horus (also Harsiesis), sister to Heru-ur, and the most popular goddess of Ancient Egypt. She is the daughter of Geb (Earth) and Nut and twin sister of Nephthys. She was a powerful magician and mother-goddess. She was believed to be the most powerful magician in the universe, because she learned Ra’s Secret Name from Ra himself. She helped Osiris civilize Egypt. She taught women how to grind grain, spin thread, and weave. She also taught the people of Egypt medicine and the marriage ceremony. She is a member of the pantheon called the Ennead of Heliopolis. She, Anubis, and Thoth brought Osiris back to life after he was murdered by their brother, Seth. Her largest temple was on the island of Philae in the Nile Delta and was moved in 1975-1980 to the island of Agilkia because of flooding. She is usually depicted as a woman with wings off the bottom of her arms sitting on a throne. Sometimes she wears a headdress of cow-horns and a sun disk, but more commonly her headdress is a stylized throne. The Greeks compared her to Persephone and Demeter.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ She and Osiris were "banished to oblivion" by Seth. The seal on Isis’ jar was broken and she died. The Isis Jar is classified as item #14B in the museum in Chicago where Jordan, Gardner, and Rayner work (413 – The Curse).
